Why Karakol Ski Base?

Karakol Ski Base is Kyrgyzstan’s premier ski resort — and for good reason. At 2,300–3,040 meters in the heart of the Tien Shan mountains, it offers 20 runs ranging from gentle beginner slopes to expert freeride terrain that draws skiers from across Central Asia.

The resort sits just 8 km from Karakol, the largest city on the eastern end of Issyk-Kul Lake. That proximity means you can be on the slopes within 20 minutes of leaving your hotel.

The Terrain

With 30 km of groomed trails and a 740-meter vertical drop, Karakol has something for every level:

  • Beginners (15%): Wide, gentle slopes near the base area with a dedicated learning zone.
  • Intermediates (30%): Long, cruisy groomers that wrap around the mountain with panoramic views.
  • Advanced (35%): Steep red runs and off-piste accessible from the upper lift stations.
  • Experts (20%): The legendary North Face freeride zone — steep chutes, open bowls, and untracked powder days after a storm.

Getting There

Karakol is a 6-hour drive from Bishkek, or a 45-minute flight to Issyk-Kul International Airport (IKU) followed by a 30-minute transfer. Shared taxis run daily from Bishkek’s Western Bus Station for around 800 KGS ($9).

Lift Tickets

Full-day adult passes are 1,500 KGS (about $17). Children under 6 ski free. Season passes are available for 25,000 KGS ($280) and include a 10% discount on equipment rental.

When to Go

The season typically runs from November through April. January and February offer the best powder. March brings longer days and spring corn snow. The new ropeway expansion (opening winter 2026-27) will add significant terrain and a modern gondola system.

Where to Stay

Karakol has a growing selection of guesthouses and small hotels. The area around the ski base has several family-run options for $15-40/night. In the city, the Karakol Hotel and Green Yard Guesthouse are popular with international visitors.
